Buying a dog collar
Author: David Ward
A dog is certainly man's best friend. This is why you need to take extra care while choosing a dog collar. Today, the market is filled with various varieties of collars for different dogs. It is no longer regarded as a 'just a strap around the neck' but an accessory that gives a dog a personality. As a fashion statement dog collars are gaining popularity because owners like their dogs to look as fashionable as they are. Before you go ahead and buy a collar for your dog, spend a little time to find out all you can about the product. This way you can make an intelligent choice, which not only suits your pocket but one, which will be comfortable to your dog.

The most important factor in buying a dog collar is your dog. The kind of collar you buy largely depends on the breed of dog and its quality and color of its fur. Ideally you would want a collar that makes your dog look good. For smaller breeds you have the option of using brighter colors like pink or purple. For large and fiercer dogs, these colors would not compliment the dog's nature. Therefore, blacks, browns and reds are more popular for larger breeds.

The next important factor to keep in mind is your dog's temperament. Some dogs are more docile than others. Thus they do not require a high intensity collar. However, dogs in training would probably need pinch or choke collars. You need to be very careful about selecting these collars because extensive pressure can harm the overall health of the dog. The safest dog collars are the ones with buckles and those with a quick release mechanism. They do not cause your dog any discomfort. Owners with more obedient and trained dogs can afford to use these collars.

If you are a beach lover or if you have a pool at home then it is wise to get a nylon collar. It is best suited for dogs that are around water a lot. The most important factor to remember is how well the collar fits on your dog. Ensure that it is not too tight to choke or discomfort the dog. Experts say that there should be atleast two-finger space between the collar and the neck. If the collar is too loose the dog might be able to get it over its head in no time. This defeats the purpose of a dog collar. Today there is a wide choice of products to choose from. Electronic dog collars range from $130 and $1300. You can get a collar and leash set which match in color.

Leather dog collars
Author: cmeyer
My husband and I have a side business of training dogs. We specialize in training retrievers for hunting. When at all possible we train the owners at the same time as the dogs. Through the years I have been surprised how many people have ill fitting collars on their pets. There is a great variety in collars available. We have found that the best type to purchase is leather dog collars. They last a long time and seem to be comfortable for the dogs.

Leather dog collars come in a variety of lengths and widths. It is important to purchase a collar that is wide enough that it will not cut into the skin, but yet not be so wide that the dog is limited in their movements. Many people make the mistake of purchasing leather dog collars in longer lengths than are needed for puppies. They think that the puppy will grow into the collar. The puppy most likely will, however having too long of a tag end can result in the puppy getting caught on things. If people do not have enough money to have proper fitting leather dog collars for the puppy, we suggest buying a cheaper nylon collar for the puppy. Once the puppy has reached its adult size the leather dog collars can be purchased to insure proper fit.

Many people like the option of using a choke collar on their dogs, especially for training to walk on a leash. We recommend using a choke collar only during training and then switching back to the leather dog collars or the collars made of nylon. The reason for this recommendation is that the metal choke collar is cold in the winter and can also discolor the dog's fur, especially when the fur gets wet. Retrievers spend a great deal of time in the water so their fur is wet often.

The main disadvantage of leather dog collars is that they can develop an odor from the oils in the dog's coat. Frequently cleaning the collar with leather cleaner helps reduce the odor and also increases the life of the leather. We often remove the collars when our dogs are in the water. This preserves the collar and reduces the risk that they could get snagged on something in the water. When your dog is well trained you do not have to rely on controlling them with their collar. A well trained dog responds to verbal commands. A collar is needed so the dog can be identified if he is lost, and to walk with a leash, it should not be your means to control behaviors.

Puppy Training: What Type Of Collar Should Your Puppy Have?
Author: Niall Kennedy
Whether the concern is to train your dog or impart an identity to it, dog collars and leashes play a crucial role. Dog collars come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles, and are much of a fashion statement nowadays. A dog collar could be a lifesaver for your puppy if, God forbid, it disappears from your residence.

With such a wide variety of dog collars available, choosing the right one for your puppy can be quite intimidating. The collar should be selected based on your preferences and your puppy's habits. For a fairly obedient puppy, a soft fabric collar is quite appropriate. However, an obstinate puppy has to be controlled by a quick yank of a pronged collar. A dog trainer may assist you in making the correct choice of a dog collar for your faithful canine companion.

The buckle variety is the most common type of dog collar. A wide variety of fabric may be used to manufacture a buckle collar, bearing different colors and designs. Your puppy's name may be embroidered onto the collar for identification purposes. Buckle collar consists of a series of spaced holes, and the buckle is fastened to attain the required size.

Buckle collar is the most basic type, which can be enhanced to ensure added safety for the puppy. For instance, breakaway collars are designed to pull apart under extreme stress. Some collar types are equipped with release tabs that ensure a hasty removal of the collar, relative to the conventional buckle type. Such variations may help prevent your puppy from choking in unforeseen circumstances.

Another collar type is a prong collar, which is quite beneficial if your puppy is rather rigid and typically pulls hard while on lead. A prong collar has perpendicular metal prongs that are evenly spaced around the inside of the collar. Upon pulling the attached leash, the prongs prod your puppy's neck, thereby inhibiting its unruly behavior. The phrase "prong collar" does sound as something harmful for your canine. However, when used appropriately, prong collars never cause any injury to the puppy, and are much safer than even other types of dog collars.

Dog Training Collars -- Proper Selection Leads To Training Success
Author: David Dunlap

The proper selection of a training collar can have a significant impact on the success of any dog training program. Most new dog trainers make the mistake of choosing a dog collar that does not allow for adequate control during the training sessions.

During my nearly four years of working with dogs, I have seen dog collars in numerous sizes and shapes. From head leaders to pronged choke collars, the choices available to dog owners are endless. However, in my training experience, I have not seen a dog training collar as effective as the classic choke collar.

The basic choke collar is an effective training tool that can be used on almost any size dog (for very small dogs, a nylon dog collar might be preferred). When used properly, the correction and response of the dog is almost immediate.

The key to using a choke collar effectively is to keep the dog collar loose when the dog is exhibiting proper behavior. For example, if the dog is heeling without pulling ahead, the choke collar should remain loose. If the dog begins to pull ahead, a quick "pop" or tightening of the collar will teach the dog that unwanted behavior has occurred. As soon as the dog's behavior has corrected, the collar is once again loosened.

By using the tightening & loosening technique, the dog quickly learns to associate good behavior with a loose collar. If the collar were to remain constantly tightened, the dog would only learn to fight against the choking feeling.

Regardless of which collar type you choose, it is imperative that the dog collar fit properly and give you, the trainer, maximum control over the dog.
